The Dracaena genus has provided some of the sturdiest houseplants available today, including the ever-popular D. deremensis. These plants, which are native to Africa, have been used as houseplants since at least the mid-19th century and are still popular because they possess the single most important quality in a houseplant: they’re pretty and fairly hard to kill. D. deremensis work as single windowsill plants or as part of a mixed group, with their various leaf patterns complementing and overlapping one another.

D. deremensis is a great plant for low-light conditions but beware of low humidity. If the humidity drops below 40 percent for an extended time, the tips of the leaves can turn brown. Try misting the plant every day to provide humidity. It’s also sensitive to fluoride and excessive salts, so try to use non-fluoridated water and flush monthly to remove fertilizer salts. Growth may cease completely below 70ºF but will resume when warmer weather returns. Iron deficiency can result in yellowing leaves between the veins—treat with an iron drench. They are susceptible to thrips and mealybugs.

Improving air quality: The Dracaena deremensisis one of the plants on NASA's air filtering plants list (part of the NASA clean air study) that reduces benzene, formaldehyde, xylene and toluene, within the air.

Removing toxins: The dracaena deremensis was a plant used in the NASA's clean air study which proved to remove a considerable amount of toxins from the environment.

Easy to grow: This plant is fairly easy to grow and quite tolerant of neglect (i.e., low light levels and lack of water), although it will start looking unattractive when neglected. The worst thing's to do with this plant is over water it or let it stay in direct sunlight for too long, otherwise it's a tough cookie.

Propagation: These are quite easy to propagate from stem tip cuttings, best done in spring or summer. You can also cut a new or old rosette and re-plant it. After replanting keep the soil moist and mist the leaves which will encourage the plant to grow. A tall plant can be propagated using the air layering method.

Pruning: You will find the lower leaves on this plant turn yellow after a period of time which is normal, and the leaves on this plant only have a life span of 2 - 3 years anyway. Remove the lower leaves when they begin to yellow. You can also cut the top of a cane (stem) when it has reached the height you wish it to grow up to and re-plant the cutting.

Toxicity: Toxic to cats and dogs, if eaten. Cats may have dilated pupils, and both cats and dogs can present symptoms such as vomiting, excess saliva and lack of appetite.

Pests and Problems: Dracaena plants are generally free from serious insect or disease problems. However, you should watch out for mealybugs, spider mites, and scale. Mealybugs and scale can both be treated with an insecticide that contains pyrethrin.

Dracaena is an adaptable, easy-to-care for house plant that does well indoors or outdoors in partial shade. Now that you know how easy it is to care for a dracaena plant, and are ready to grow one in your own home.

Temperature Temperatures from 60°F (15°C) - 75°F (24°C) are ideal. Under 55°F/12°C is going to harm the plant which may become noticeable if the leaves begin curling. Try and avoid the plant being near cold drafts, which will also cause harm.
sunlight A good mix of sun shine and shade is ideal for this dracaena, but hardly any direct sunlight. Although it grows quicker and better in bright light you'll also find it survives and grows well enough in low light conditions.
Soil Most well draining potting soil mix types are fine to use.
Water Keep the soil slightly damp to the touch and in the winter slightly dry.
